Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide Antibodies, IgG, Serum
Use
This test is useful for evaluating patients suspected of having rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and for differentiating RA from other inflammatory arthritis or connective tissue diseases. The presence of cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) antibodies is suggestive of RA, especially when clinical features of the disease are present. High levels of CCP antibodies can identify RA patients with erosive joint disease.
Special Instructions
If not ordering electronically, complete and send either the Kidney Transplant Test Request or the General Request (T239) form with the specimen.
Limitations
Positive results for CCP antibodies may occur in some patients with systemic lupus erythematosus or other autoimmune, connective tissue diseases. Antirheumatic therapy should not be initiated based solely on a positive CCP antibody test, and changes in treatment should not be based upon CCP antibody levels. In some subgroups, there is a 10% false-positive rate. Late diagnosis may lead to increased morbidity and mortality, emphasizing the importance of early testing and diagnosis.
