Cytokine Panel, Plasma
Use
This test is essential for understanding the etiology of infectious or chronic inflammatory diseases when used in conjunction with clinical information and other laboratory testing. It is particularly useful in research studies that require an assessment of cytokine responses, offering insight into immune system functioning and the complex roles cytokines play in mediating cell-to-cell communication within both innate and adaptive immune systems.
Special Instructions
The test involves a bead-based multiplex immunoassay. It is important to note that cytokine testing should only be used alongside clinical information and other laboratory results for a comprehensive assessment of a patient's condition.
Limitations
The results from cytokine testing should not be used to establish or exclude a specific diagnosis. Normal cytokine levels do not eliminate the possibility of an infection or an inflammatory condition. Immunomodulatory agents can affect cytokine concentrations, potentially leading to misleading results, particularly in patients receiving treatments like IL-6 inhibitors. Therefore, caution must be exercised in interpreting the results.
