Disaccharidase Activity Panel, Tissue
Use
Disaccharidases in the small intestines are responsible for breaking down disaccharides into monosaccharides. A deficiency in one or more disaccharidase enzymes can result in an array of gastrointestinal symptoms, including intolerance to foods containing complex sugars, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, cramping, gas, bloating, nausea, malnutrition, weight loss, or failure to thrive. These symptoms can lead to misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis of disaccharide deficiencies.
Special Instructions
This test is not intended for carrier detection. Biopsy homogenates are retained for one month post-testing. If not ordering electronically, complete and send a Biochemical Genetics Patient Information form or a Gastroenterology and Hepatology Test Request form with the specimen.
Limitations
This test cannot distinguish between primary and secondary causes of disaccharidase deficiencies, which can vary due to genetic and mucosal damage causes. Neither primary nor secondary deficiencies can be speculated upon purely from test results.
