Drugs of Abuse (10 panel) and Alcohol Screen, Serum
Use
The Drugs of Abuse (10 panel) and Alcohol Screen, Serum test is designed to detect the presence of various drugs and alcohol in a patient's serum. It is commonly used in clinical, legal, and employment settings to evaluate individuals for substance use or abuse. The panel includes tests for a variety of substances, including ethanol, opiates, cocaine/metabolites, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, amphetamines, barbiturates, methadone/metabolite, phencyclidine, methamphetamine/MDMA, and oxycodone/oxymorphone. This test helps in screening and monitoring substance use disorders, aiding in therapeutic decisions, and ensuring compliance in rehabilitation programs.
Special Instructions
Special care should be taken during specimen collection to ensure that skin preparation is free of alcohol to avoid false positives. Blood should be collected in a plain, red-top tube as serum gel tubes are not acceptable for this test. It is important that a separate specimen is submitted for each order since specimens cannot be shared between multiple orders. Additionally, specimen volume requirements must be adhered to in order to obtain valid test results.
Limitations
This test, like all tests in the domain of drug screening, is subject to limitations and potential interferences. False positives or negatives can occur due to cross-reactivity with other substances or improper specimen handling. The presence of drugs or metabolites at concentrations below the detection limit will not be identified. Confirmation testing is required for all presumptive positive results and may be performed at an additional charge. It is important to consider all clinical findings and patient history to interpret test results effectively.
