Electron Microscopy, Varies
Use
Electron Microscopy is used for the diagnosis of medical disorders such as storage diseases, CADASIL, and primary ciliary dyskinesia. It provides vital information in the comprehensive assessment of human disease and is often used alongside light microscopy and immunohistopathological techniques. This diagnostic tool offers both confirmatory and diagnostic value to pathologists and clinicians.
Special Instructions
Whole blood specimens must arrive within 48 hours of collection. Failure to supply the completed Electron Microscopy Patient Information form and indication of tissue source and reason for testing will result in delays. Tumor biopsies are accepted only as part of a pathology consultation, and specific ordering guidance is available for various pathological consultations and specific tests.
Limitations
Improper collection, handling, and fixation of tissue may lead to diagnostic confusion. The tissue submitted must have been viable at the time of fixation and optimal fixation of tissue is imperative for accurate interpretation of electron microscopic images. Certain specimen types such as liver/gastrointestinal and hair shaft specimens are unacceptable and will lead to cancellation if received.
