Enterovirus, Molecular Detection, PCR, Plasma
Use
Enterovirus are positive-sense RNA viruses in the Picornaviridae family that can cause a range of illnesses, from mild respiratory disease to severe central nervous system conditions like aseptic meningitis and myocarditis. This test aids in diagnosing enterovirus infections using plasma specimens, focusing on detecting enterovirus nucleic acid, which is crucial for CNS infection diagnosis due to its sensitivity.
Special Instructions
This test should not be used to screen asymptomatic patients. To order this test, submit a raw clinical sample in a screw-capped, sterile container after centrifugation and aliquot of plasma into a plastic vial.
Limitations
A negative result does not rule out the possibility of an enterovirus infection. This assay might detect virus from non-plasma specimen types in asymptomatic individuals, so interpretation must be done in context of clinical history consistent with enterovirus infection.
