Epstein Barr Virus Latency Membrane Protein 1 Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
The test is useful for the identification of Epstein Barr virus (EBV) infection in normal, inflammatory, and neoplastic tissues. It evaluates the presence of the latent membrane protein 1 (LMP-1) oncogene of EBV, which is believed to contribute to the development of various EBV-associated tumors. This test may assist in the diagnosis of reactive and neoplastic lymphoproliferative and plasma cell proliferative disorders.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain; no pathologist interpretation is provided. Technical component only stains should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation as they will be canceled. The test requires formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue block or 2 unstained, positively charged glass slides per test ordered.
Limitations
This test does not include a pathologist's interpretation, so it cannot provide a full diagnostic evaluation without further consultation. Age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity, and best practices recommend cutting within 6 weeks. Environmental factors can alter the charge of glass slides, affecting slide staining and possibly resulting in inconsistent results.
