Factor XI Inhibitor Screen, Plasma
Use
The Factor XI Inhibitor Screen is used to detect the presence of a specific inhibitor directed against coagulation factor XI. This test aids in identifying an inhibitor to a specific coagulation factor which may arise due to multiple exposures from transfusions in patients deficient in that factor, in response to specific disease states, or may be drug-induced. Non-specific inhibitors may also be present in patients and prolong certain screening tests such as prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time.
Special Instructions
This test is not orderable on its own and is only available as part of a testing profile. More information regarding the collection and handling of specimens can be found in the Coagulation Guidelines for Specimen Handling and Processing.
Limitations
Potent lupus-like anticoagulants may cause false-positive results for a specific factor inhibitor such as factor VIII or IX. The test consists of measuring factor XI activity before and after incubation of a mixture of normal plasma and patient's plasma. The presence of an indication of a factor XI inhibitor is determined by comparing the factor XI activity results and the calculated expected values.
