Fascin Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Fascin is an actin-bundling protein that is present in antigen-presenting cells and is upregulated in Epstein Barr virus-positive lymphocytes and Hodgkin cells. Fascin immunostains are used in classification of lymphomas, as they help to distinguish classical Hodgkin lymphoma, where fascin is usually positive, from lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma, where fascin is usually negative. It provides valuable insight into the immunohistochemical profile of lymphatic tissue and associated disorders.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain and does not include pathologist interpretation. For a full diagnostic evaluation or a second opinion, order PATHC / Pathology Consultation. Digital images of the stains, if ordered electronically, are accessible via the Mayo Clinic Laboratories website. Manual requisition does not provide access to digital images.
Limitations
The accuracy of fascin staining can be influenced by the age of cut paraffin sections, which can affect immunoreactivity. Best practices recommend cutting paraffin sections within 6 weeks. The environment can also impact slide staining due to changes in slide surface chemistry. Precautions should include minimizing the time slides are stored unpackaged, and limiting exposure to high humidity, heat, and plastics.
