Fecal Occult Blood, Colorectal Cancer Screen, Qualitative, Immunochemical, Feces
Use
Colorectal cancer screening is essential as it is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. Early detection through screening methods like Fecal Occult Blood Testing (FOBT) significantly reduces mortality rates. This test is specifically used for screening gastrointestinal bleeding indicative of colorectal cancer, utilizing fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) that specifically detects human hemoglobin without dietary restrictions, unlike guaiac-based tests.
Special Instructions
This test is not suitable for patients with hemoglobinopathies. It will not detect upper gastrointestinal bleeding; therefore, if indicated, an HQ / HemoQuant test should be ordered instead. Patients with conditions like hemorrhoids or menstruating females should avoid testing until bleeding has stopped. Lower gastrointestinal bleeding, not covered by this test, should be detected using alternative methods.
Limitations
The Fecal Occult Blood Test does not detect upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to hemoglobin breakdown during transit. The test does not replace complete diagnostic methods like colonoscopy. False positives can be due to other gastrointestinal bleeding not caused by colorectal cancer. Negative results do not assure absence of lesions due to intermittent bleeding or uneven distribution of blood in feces.
