Flunitrazepam Confirmation, Serum
Use
This test is used for the confirmation of flunitrazepam, commonly known as Rohypnol, in serum. Flunitrazepam is a potent benzodiazepine used for short-term treatment of insomnia and as a pre-anesthetic medication. It has been associated with misuse as a 'date rape' drug due to its strong sedative effects. The test is critical in contexts where drug overdose, abuse, or compliance with prescribed usage must be assessed, as flunitrazepam is not legally marketed in the United States.
Special Instructions
The availability of this test extends to clients in New York State. Physicians must be aware that plasma gel tubes and serum gel tubes are not acceptable. Specimens should be shipped refrigerated if possible, using the proper containers to avoid rejection due to improper collection or shipment processes.
Limitations
The test is limited by its dependence on proper specimen collection and handling. Plasma and serum must be collected in specific tubes as indicated, and refrigerants are preferred during shipping to maintain sample integrity. Hemolysis, lipemia, icterus, or other factors do not automatically cause rejection, but may impact test results. Analytical sensitivity is contingent on the instrument calibration and standard reference concentrations available for flunitrazepam.
