Fumarate Hydratase Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Identifying fumarate hydratase-deficient neoplasms and supporting the diagnosis of an atypical smooth muscle tumor over leiomyosarcoma. This test can play a crucial role in diagnosing hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell carcinoma (HLRCC) syndrome, which is linked to fumarate hydratase deficiency due to germline alterations in the FH gene. Such identification helps in determining appropriate clinical management and surveillance strategies for patients suspected of having these conditions.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain and does not provide any pathologist interpretation. Interpretation should be sought separately through a PATHC / Pathology Consultation order. A green "Attention Pathology" address label (T498) and the pink Immunostain Technical Only label must be attached to the transport container. The test is not to be combined with PATHC as the technical component will be canceled in such cases.
Limitations
The test is affected by the age of cut paraffin sections, as immunoreactivity can diminish over time and is dependent on antigen stability. Best practices suggest that paraffin sections should be cut within 6 weeks. Environmental factors may affect the charge of glass slides, influencing slide staining results. Optimal storage limits exposure to humidity, heat, and plastics to preserve the integrity of the slides.
