Galactitol, Quantitative, Urine
Use
Useful for monitoring effectiveness of treatment in patients with galactosemia and establishing a baseline level prior to initiating treatment for galactosemia. Urinary galactitol is often not affected by acute dietary ingestion of galactose; therefore, it is not a substitute for galactose‑1‑phosphate in monitoring diet.
Special Instructions
Patient’s age is required. If not ordering electronically, complete and send a Biochemical Genetics Test Request (T798) with the specimen.
Limitations
Urinary galactitol levels may not reflect acute and transient effects of galactose intake and therefore are not a substitute for galactose‑1‑phosphate measurement.
