Galectin-3 Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Galectin-3 is part of the beta-galactoside-binding lectin family, involved in cellular adhesion. It is normally expressed by macrophages, neutrophils, and mast cells but is not typically present in normal or benign thyroid tissues. However, its presence in thyroid carcinoma can be critical for distinguishing between benign and malignant thyroid cases. This test can be highly useful in the context of differentiating between these conditions, in conjunction with other clinical findings and diagnostic tests.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical component of the stain, meaning no pathologist interpretation is provided. If ordered alongside PATHC (Pathology Consultation), the technical component stains will be canceled. Use the provided green 'Attention Pathology' and pink Immunostain Technical Only labels for shipping in the designated envelope.
Limitations
The test does not include pathologist interpretation, only technical performance is assessed. Positive and negative controls are verified during processing but interpretation should only be done in context with the patient’s full clinical history by a qualified pathologist. The age of paraffin sections and slide quality can affect staining and interpretation—slides should be freshly cut and handled properly to avoid deterioration.
