Garlic IgG
Use
Garlic IgG testing is used to determine immunologic sensitization to the garlic allergen. It is useful in special clinical situations to guide dietary elimination and food challenge tests in patients with food-related complaints. However, the presence of food-specific IgG alone is not evidence of a food allergy, but rather indicates sensitization. Therefore, this test should only be ordered by clinicians who are aware of its limitations.
Special Instructions
Draw blood using a plain red-top tube. A serum gel tube is also acceptable. After drawing, spin down and send 0.5 mL of the collected serum refrigerated in a plastic vial for testing.
Limitations
The clinical utility of food-specific IgG tests, including garlic IgG, has not been established. Results should be interpreted with caution, as the presence of garlic-specific IgG antibodies only indicates immunologic sensitization and not an allergy. It is essential that only physicians who recognize the test's limitations order Garlic IgG testing.
