Glipizide (Glucotrol)
Use
Glipizide testing is primarily used to determine the concentration of glipizide in plasma or serum. Glipizide is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes by controlling high blood sugar. This test can help in monitoring the therapeutic levels of the drug and ensuring that the patient is receiving an appropriate dose to manage their blood sugar levels effectively. Overdose or inappropriate dosing of glipizide can lead to hypoglycemia, hence monitoring is important for patient safety.
Special Instructions
Submit only one of the specified specimen types (plasma or serum) in the appropriate container. Ensure the specimen is properly refrigerated before sending to the laboratory. Avoid using gel tubes as they are not acceptable for this test.
Limitations
The test result could be influenced by improper specimen handling such as inadequate refrigeration which can lead to degradation of the analyte. Hemolysis, lipemia, or icteric samples can interfere with the test results, and such samples should be avoided. The test provides no information on the concentration of other drugs or metabolites other than glipizide.
