GLUT-1 Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
The GLUT-1 immunostain is useful for the identification of erythrocytes in various normal and neoplastic tissues. Glucose transporter 1 (GLUT-1) is a ubiquitous facilitative membrane glucose transporter that is activated by hypoxia-sensing cellular pathways and may sustain cellular metabolism via glycolysis under hypoxic conditions. High levels of GLUT-1 are expressed on erythrocytes, the endothelium of the blood-brain barrier, and the perineurium. Some carcinomas, such as fallopian tube carcinomas, may show overexpression of GLUT-1, which can be significant in diagnosis and research contexts.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain without pathologist interpretation. It should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation. If ordered with PATHC, the technical component stains will be canceled. For digital imaging orders must be placed electronically. Clients without electronic orders cannot access digital images.
Limitations
Age of cut paraffin sections can affect immunoreactivity. Stability varies and is antigen-dependent. It is recommended to cut paraffin sections within 6 weeks. The charge of glass slides is affected by environmental factors and may alter slide staining; unsuitable slides can lead to inconsistent staining. Best practices include minimizing the time slides are stored after being unpackaged and limiting exposure to high humidity and heat.
