HEG1 Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
The HEG1 immunostain is utilized primarily for differentiating epithelioid mesothelioma from non-small cell carcinoma. HEG homolog 1 (HEG1) is a heavily glycosylated membrane protein that plays a role in endothelial cell associations crucial for vascular system development. It serves as a key marker for malignant mesothelioma, especially epithelioid mesothelioma, and could potentially be used as a marker for sarcomatoid mesothelioma as well.
Special Instructions
This test is technical only and does not include pathologist interpretation. Ordering with PATHC/Pathology Consultation leads to cancellation of the technical component stains. Attach the green 'Attention Pathology' label and pink Immunostain Technical Only label to the transport container. Order electronically to access digital images; manual requisitions do not provide digital access.
Limitations
The evaluation does not involve pathologist interpretation. For comprehensive diagnostics, a full pathology consultation is recommended. Immunoreactivity can be influenced by specimen age and slide surface conditions; best practices require cutting paraffin sections within six weeks of testing and minimizing slide exposure to humidity and plastics. Non-formalin fixed or non-paraffin embedded tissues, and non-charged slides are some of the main causes for specimen rejection.
