Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test is useful for aiding in the identification of Helicobacter pylori infection, which is a bacterium that frequently infects the stomach by colonizing the gastric pits. H. pylori infection is associated with the development of gastroduodenal ulcers and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas. The immunostain is used to provide a technical component only, without pathologist interpretation, which assists in visualizing the presence of the bacteria within tissue samples.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain; no pathologist interpretation is provided. If a pathologist's interpretation is required, order PATHC / Pathology Consultation for a full diagnostic evaluation or second opinion of the case. Technical component only stains should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation. If ordered with PATHC, the technical component stains will be canceled. Any immunohistochemistry (IHC)/in situ hybridization (ISH) stain performed as part of the PATHC will be performed at the reviewing pathologist's discretion at an additional charge.
Limitations
This test does not include pathologist interpretation, only the technical execution of the stain. Proper interpretation of the results requires considering the patient's clinical history and other diagnostic tests performed by a qualified pathologist. Age of a cut paraffin section can influence immunoreactivity, and stability thresholds are antigen-dependent. Best practice for paraffin sections is to cut them within 6 weeks. The charge of glass slides can be affected by environmental conditions and may alter slide staining outcome.
