Hemoglobin A1c, Blood
Use
Evaluating the long‑term control of blood glucose concentrations in patients with diabetes. Diagnosing diabetes. Identifying patients at increased risk for diabetes (prediabetes). This assay is not useful in determining day‑to‑day glucose control and should not be used to replace daily home testing of blood glucose.
Special Instructions
If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send a Kidney Transplant Test Request with the specimen.
Limitations
The presence of hemoglobin variants (e.g., Hb Camperdown, Hb Fukuoka, Hb Philadelphia, Hb Wayne, Hb Raleigh) may interfere with measurements. In rare homozygous or double heterozygous variants (e.g., CC, SS, EE, SC), no HbA is present and no HbA1c value can be determined. In such cases, serum fructosamine may be helpful. Hemoglobinopathies and altered erythrocyte lifespan (e.g., hemolytic anemia, polycythemia, postsplenectomy) can lead to inaccurate results and misinterpretation; fructosamine is recommended in these scenarios.
