Hepatocyte Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test is useful for distinguishing hepatocellular carcinoma from other types of cancer. Normal liver tissue is expected to show a positive result with distinct granular cytoplasmic staining of hepatocytes. Bile ducts and nonparenchymal liver cells are expected to show a negative result.
Special Instructions
This test involves only the technical performance of the stain and does not include a pathologist's interpretation. In cases where interpretation is required, a separate pathology consultation should be ordered. The test should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation, as these technical component stains will be canceled if ordered with PATHC. Digital images are only available when orders are placed electronically.
Limitations
The effectiveness of this test can be impacted by the age of the paraffin section, as the immunoreactivity can degrade. Environmental factors affecting the charge of glass slides may alter slide staining. Best practice suggests that paraffin sections be cut within 6 weeks of analysis. Unsuitable glass slide surfaces may also contribute to staining inconsistencies.
