Herpes Simplex Virus, I and II (HSV I and II) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test is useful for identifying herpes simplex virus I and II infections. HSV I is typically associated with oral lesions, while HSV II is generally linked to genital lesions. Immunohistochemical staining allows for the detection of these viruses in tissue samples, which can be crucial for diagnosing infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients who may experience life-threatening systemic infections.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain, with no pathologist interpretation provided. It cannot be ordered with a PATHC / Pathology Consultation, as the technical component stains will be canceled if ordered together. Proper labeling with the required 'Attention Pathology' and 'Immunostain Technical Only' labels is necessary for submission.
Limitations
The test does not include pathologist interpretation, only technical performance of the stain. Age of the paraffin section could impact immunoreactivity, and environmental factors might affect the charge of glass slides, potentially influencing staining outcomes. Only suitable tissue types such as formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue or unstained, positively charged glass slides are accepted; other types will lead to rejection.
