Human Placental Lactogen Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
The Human Placental Lactogen (HPL) immunostain test is useful for aiding in the identification of placenta-related tumors, such as trophoblastic tumors and choriocarcinomas. The detection of the hormone, secreted by the placenta during normal pregnancy, is significant for diagnosing these conditions. It is important to note that this test only provides technical performance of the immunohistochemical stain without pathologist interpretation.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the immunohistochemical stain and does not include a pathologist interpretation. Pathologist interpretation, if required, should be ordered as a separate Pathology Consultation (PATHC). Technical component only stains should not be ordered with PATHC, as they will be canceled if done so. The accompanying immunostain technical only envelope should be used for specimen submission.
Limitations
The HPL test does not include pathologist interpretation, focusing solely on the technical performance of the stain. Interpretation of results should be conducted in conjunction with the patient's clinical history and other diagnostic tests by a qualified pathologist. Proper specimen collection and handling are crucial as factors such as the age of paraffin sections and environmental conditions affecting slide chemistry can influence immunoreactivity.
