IgM Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
The immunoglobulin molecules (antibodies) function as surface receptors for antigens for B lymphocytes and as secretory products of plasma cells forming the humoral arm of the immune system. IgM represents one of the immunoglobulin heavy chain types. IgM positive-B lymphocytes are normally present in the follicular mantle zones and germinal centers. Immunoreactivity is a specific marker for B lymphocytes and plasma cells. Diagnostically, staining for immunoglobulin heavy chains can aid in the diagnosis and classification of small B cell malignant lymphomas and multiple myeloma.

Limitations
Age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity. Stability thresholds vary widely among published literature and are antigen dependent. Best practice is for paraffin sections to be cut within 6 weeks. The charge of glass slides can be affected by environmental factors and subsequently may alter slide staining. Sending unsuitable glass slides can result in inconsistent staining due to poor slide surface chemistry.
