JC Virus, Molecular Detection, PCR, Spinal Fluid
Use
Detection of JCV DNA in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is useful in aiding the diagnosis of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) due to JC virus. This test should not be used to diagnose Creutzfeldt‑Jakob disease and is not recommended for screening asymptomatic patients.
Special Instructions
Follow the Meningitis/Encephalitis Panel Algorithm for guidance on reflex/additional testing. If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send a Microbiology Test Request (T244) form.
Limitations
Detection is specific for JC virus and does not cross‑react with closely related polyomaviruses such as BK virus or SV40. Detection in CSF replaces the need for brain biopsy in suspected PML cases.
