Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Beta Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
The immunohistochemical detection of luteinizing hormone (LH) beta subunit is useful in the classification of pituitary adenomas. Its expression is usually associated with gonadotroph adenomas, which are typically non-functional pituitary tumors. The clinical significance lies in aiding the differential diagnosis of pituitary adenomas and providing insights into potential hormone production and secretion characteristics of the tumor.
Special Instructions
This test is the technical component only, meaning it includes only the performance of the stain without pathologist interpretation. It should not be ordered alongside a pathology consultation (PATHC), as any immunohistochemistry performed in a PATHC will be determined by the reviewing pathologist. Orders for technical component stains with PATHC will be canceled.
Limitations
This test does not include a pathologist interpretation, so results must be interpreted in conjunction with the patient's clinical history and other diagnostic tests by a qualified pathologist. Immunoreactivity of the tissue may be affected by the age of the paraffin section and environmental factors affecting the charge of glass slides, which can in turn impact staining quality due to poor slide surface chemistry. Stability thresholds can vary widely depending on antigen characteristics and should be confirmed based on current literature and best practices.
