Lyme Disease, Molecular Detection, PCR, Varies
Use
Supports the diagnosis of Lyme disease in conjunction with serologic testing. Specific indications include testing skin biopsies when a rash lesion is not characteristic of erythema migrans and testing synovial fluid or synovium to support the diagnosis of Lyme arthritis. This test should not be used to screen asymptomatic patients.
Special Instructions
Acute Tick‑Borne Disease Testing Algorithm and Meningitis/Encephalitis Panel Algorithm are available. Ordering guidance: this assay does not detect Borrelia miyamotoi; if suspected, order BMIPB (Borrelia miyamotoi Detection, PCR, Blood) or BMIYC (Borrelia miyamotoi Detection, PCR, Spinal Fluid). Specimen source is required.
Limitations
PCR is intended as an adjunct to FDA‑approved serologic testing; results should be correlated with serologic, epidemiologic data, and clinical presentation. Melting curve analysis can differentiate B. burgdorferi sensu stricto from B. mayonii, B. afzelii, and B. garinii, but cannot differentiate between B. afzelii and B. garinii. Not indicated for asymptomatic screening.
