Macroamylase
Use
The macroamylase test is used to detect the presence of macroamylase complexes in the serum, which can lead to persistently elevated serum amylase levels without pancreatic disease. This is important for distinguishing between benign macroamylasemia and other conditions that cause hyperamylasemia, such as pancreatitis or salivary gland inflammation.
Special Instructions
The test requires careful specimen handling to ensure accuracy. Precise collection and storage instructions must be followed to prevent degradation of the specimen.
Limitations
False negatives may occur if macroamylase complexes are below the detection limit of the test. Factors such as improper sample handling, improper storage conditions, or delays in processing can lead to inaccurate results. Hemolysis can interfere with the test, leading to possible rejection of the specimen.
