Marjoram, IgE, Serum
Use
The test is useful for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to marjoram and defining the allergen responsible for signs and symptoms. It can identify allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes, to confirm sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy, and to investigate specific allergies to insect venom, drugs, or chemical allergens. Testing for IgE antibodies helps in the diagnosis of allergic diseases associated with elevated IgE levels.
Special Instructions
For ordering, if not processed electronically, complete and send an Allergen Test Request form (T236) with the specimen. The test involves fluorescence enzyme immunoassay (FEIA) method and is available for New York State patients.
Limitations
The test may not be useful for patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists, nor in patients whose management does not depend on allergen specificity identification. Some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity may still have measurable IgE levels. False positives can occur in patients with high serum IgE due to nonspecific binding.
