MayoComplete Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) Panel, Next-Generation Sequencing, Tumor
Use
This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis and identifying targeted therapies for patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors. It assesses microsatellite instability status, which can determine the efficacy of immunotherapy in solid tumors. Identifying somatic mutations across the specified gene panel aids in molecular genetic profiling, which is essential for guiding treatment plans and minimizing associated risks with therapies.
Special Instructions
A pathology report must accompany the specimen for testing to be performed. It should include the patient's name, block number on all materials, tissue collection date, and tissue source information. If not ordering electronically, complete and send an Oncology Test Request form with the specimen. A slide review will always be performed at an additional charge when this test is ordered.
Limitations
This test cannot differentiate between somatic and germline alterations, and DNA variants of uncertain significance may be identified. It does not detect multi-exon deletions or duplications and large-scale genomic copy number variants. The presence of rare polymorphisms can lead to false results. Reliable results depend on proper specimen collection and processing, preferably from FFPE tissues; improper treatment like decalcification may cause failure. A negative result cannot rule out the presence of low-frequency variants below the assay's detection limits.
