Melons IgG
Use
The Melons IgG test measures IgG antibodies specific to melons, including cantaloupe, honeydew, and muskmelon. Although the presence of food-specific IgG alone cannot be taken as evidence of a food allergy, it indicates immunologic sensitization to the food allergen. Such tests can be used in special clinical situations to select foods for evaluation by diet elimination and challenge in patients who have food-related complaints. This test is intended for use by physicians who recognize the limitations of the test.
Special Instructions
This test should be ordered only by healthcare providers aware of its limitations and the context for assessment. The use of this test requires specialized ordering and interpretation as it may not correlate directly with clinical allergies.
Limitations
Reference intervals for food-specific IgG tests have not been established. The clinical utility of IgG tests for food allergy testing has not been established. IgG testing cannot confirm food allergies and is only suggested as part of broader clinical evaluations where diet elimination and challenges are considered. The test is sensitive to conditions affecting IgG levels and may lead to inappropriate clinical conclusions if not interpreted correctly by knowledgeable clinicians.
