Mercury, Hair
Use
Measurement of mercury concentration in hair can detect and quantify mercury exposure. Mercury binds to proteins like keratin, and hair levels correlate with severity of clinical symptoms. Segmental analysis of hair by length may help approximate timing of exposure (e.g., hair at skin level reflects exposure about one week prior; 1 inch distal reflects about two months prior) ([mayocliniclabs.com](https://www.mayocliniclabs.com/test-catalog/Overview/8498?utm_source=openai)).
Special Instructions
Use the Hair and Nails Collection Kit (T565) and follow the "Collecting Hair and Nails for Metals Testing" instructions. Indicate source of hair (e.g., head, beard, mustache, chest, pubic) on the container. All specimens evaluated for suitability upon receipt ([mayocliniclabs.com](https://www.mayocliniclabs.com/-/media/it-mmfiles/Special-Instructions/A/D/5/Trace_Metals_Analysis_Specimen_Collection_and_Transport?utm_source=openai)).
Limitations
Cosmetic treatments such as hair dyes may introduce heavy metal contamination, potentially confounding results. Collection and handling issues and inappropriate test selection can impair interpretation. Reference ranges are not established for individuals aged 0–15 years; in individuals ≥16 years, levels ≥1.0 mcg/g may indicate excessive exposure ([mayocliniclabs.com](https://www.mayocliniclabs.com/test-catalog/Overview/8498?utm_source=openai)).
