Merkel CC (MCPyV) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Identification of Merkel cell polyomavirus infected cells. MCPyV infections are common and typically benign, but in rare cases, they lead to Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) due to the expression of MCPyV large T-antigen. MCPyV-positive MCC exhibits less aggressive behavior than MCPyV-negative MCC.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain; no pathologist interpretation is provided. Technical component only stains should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation. If ordered with PATHC, the technical component stains will be canceled. Any immunohistochemistry (IHC)/in situ hybridization (ISH) stain performed as part of the PATHC will be performed at the pathologist's discretion at an additional charge.
Limitations
This test does not include pathologist interpretation, only technical performance of the stain. Interpretation should be performed in the context of the patient's clinical history and other diagnostic tests by a qualified pathologist. The age of paraffin sections can affect immunoreactivity, and best practice is for paraffin sections to be cut within 6 weeks. Environmental factors may alter slide staining, and unsuitable slides can result in inconsistent staining.
