Methadone Confirmation, Random, Urine
Use
The Methadone Confirmation test is used for monitoring compliance of methadone treatment in patients undergoing therapy for analgesia or drug rehabilitation. Methadone is a synthetic opioid that binds to opioid receptors but does not produce euphoria and has fewer withdrawal symptoms compared to opiates. Measuring methadone and its primary metabolite, EDDP, in urine helps in assessing compliance with therapy and in detecting possible adulteration of urine samples through spiking.
Special Instructions
For situations where chain of custody is required, order MTDNX / Methadone Confirmation, Chain of Custody, Random, Urine. If urine creatinine is required or adulteration of the sample is suspected, order ADULT / Adulterants Survey, Random, Urine. Collect a random urine specimen in a plastic container without preservative.
Limitations
Urine pH can affect methadone detection; thus, EDDP levels, which are less influenced by urine pH, are preferable for compliance assessment. Methadone urine concentrations do not correlate well with serum levels or the administered dose. The test cannot identify the causative factors for variations in methadone levels, such as individual metabolic differences or drug interactions.
