Methemoglobin Summary Interpretation
Use
The test is useful for incorporating and summarizing the results from additional molecular tests in the evaluation of methemoglobinemia. This summary is added to the Methemoglobinemia Evaluation, Blood (MEV1) and provides a consultative interpretation of all testing performed. The results from this test are beneficial for the ordering physician as they provide an overall evaluation based on the combination of results from multiple tests.
Special Instructions
This test is only orderable as a reflex when one or more molecular tests are added to the Methemoglobinemia Evaluation, Blood (MEV1). It serves as a consultative interpretation that summarizes the testing performed along with any pertinent clinical information. This summary will be provided after additional testing is complete, allowing for the incorporation of subsequent results into an overall evaluation.
Limitations
No significant cautionary statements are provided. The test is summarized as beneficial for conditions involving hemoglobin variants associated with increased measured levels of methemoglobin and sulfhemoglobin. It aids in the evaluation of complex hemoglobin disorders that may involve abnormalities of alpha, beta, delta, and gamma genes, which may arise from point alterations or deletions within globin genes. Such disorders can require molecular testing for a complete evaluation.
