Microsporidia species, Molecular Detection, PCR, Varies
Use
This test is useful for detecting Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Encephalitozoon species in fecal and urine specimens, supporting the clinical diagnosis of microsporidiosis. The test is particularly relevant for immunocompromised patients who present with persistent, watery diarrhea. Microsporidiosis is caused by highly specialized fungi known as microsporidia, and this assay targets the most common species responsible for intestinal and renal infections. The detection of these species can assist in diagnosing microsporidiosis in contexts where other diagnostic methods may be insufficient.
Special Instructions
For specimens other than feces or urine, order MTBS / Microsporidia Stain, Varies. A specimen source is required. If not ordering electronically, complete and submit the Microbiology Test Request or Gastroenterology and Hepatology Test Request forms with the specimen.
Limitations
This assay is designed to detect symptomatic infection with Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Encephalitozoon species but may indicate asymptomatic carriage. It cannot detect microsporidiosis caused by less common species and should only be used for patients with clinical symptoms consistent with microsporidiosis. A negative result does not definitively rule out infection. Other diagnostic tests may be necessary for a comprehensive evaluation.
