Midazolam (Versed), serum
Use
Midazolam (Versed) testing is used to monitor serum levels of the medication in patients undergoing treatment. Midazolam is a benzodiazepine medication primarily used for anesthesia, procedural sedation, trouble sleeping, and severe agitation. Monitoring is important in cases where patients might be at risk of side effects due to incorrect dosage or interactions with other drugs. This test ensures that the therapeutic levels are achieved without reaching toxic levels, thereby optimizing patient safety and treatment efficacy.
Special Instructions
Specimen collection should be careful to avoid gel separation tubes which are not acceptable for this test. Blood samples should be drawn in the appropriate tubes and spun down immediately after collection to ensure sample stability and accuracy of results.
Limitations
It’s important to note that while this test measures the concentration of midazolam in the serum, it does not measure the drug's active metabolites which could also contribute to the therapeutic or toxic effects. Also, variations in plasma protein binding can influence total serum drug levels. The test does not differentiate between the effects of different benzodiazepines if patients are consuming more than one.
