MLH1 Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test is useful for evaluating tumor tissue to identify patients at high risk for having hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer, also known as Lynch syndrome, as well as those at risk for hereditary endometrial carcinoma. Lynch syndrome is an autosomal dominant hereditary cancer syndrome associated with germline variants in mismatch repair genes, including MLH1. This immunohistochemistry test helps to identify tumors with defective DNA mismatch repair and is instrumental in identifying the gene responsible for the anomaly within the tumor.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the immunohistochemical stain, without pathologist interpretation. Technical component only stains should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation as they will be canceled if ordered together. It is important to send the correct forms and use the proper labels included in the kit for shipping.
Limitations
The MLH1 IHC test does not include pathologist interpretation. Factors such as the age of cut paraffin sections or the unsuitability of glass slides due to environmental conditions can affect immunoreactivity and slide staining, leading to inconsistent results. Although typically performed on the tumor of an affected individual, this test is only one part of a broader strategy to evaluate potential Lynch syndrome cases.
