Mucin 4, Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Mucin 4 (MUC4) is a large membrane-anchored glycoprotein belonging to the mucin family, which plays important roles in the protection of epithelial cells and epithelial renewal and differentiation. It is expressed in the cytoplasm and membrane of respiratory, gastrointestinal, cervical, and prostatic epithelial cells. Its overexpression is observed in many carcinomas, and it aids in differentiating sarcomatoid carcinoma (often expressed) from sarcomatoid mesothelioma (usually negative).
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain; no pathologist interpretation is provided. Pathology Consultation (PATHC) must be ordered separately for interpretation as IHC stains performed as part of PATHC will be at the pathologist's discretion.
Limitations
The test is performed only on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue, or on positively-charged glass slides. Nonformalin fixed or nonparaffin embedded tissues and certain types of slides will be rejected. Additionally, age and handling of paraffin sections can affect immunoreactivity. Best practice recommends cutting paraffin sections within 6 weeks to maintain antigen stability.
