Mycoplasma pneumoniae Antibody Interpretation
Use
Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a small bacterium transmitted via organism-containing droplets, causing upper respiratory infection, pharyngitis, and tracheobronchitis, particularly in children. It is associated with approximately 20% of community-acquired pneumonia cases and can present with extrapulmonary complications such as central nervous system and cardiac manifestations. Although the disease is typically self-limited, severe illness has been observed in immunocompromised patients. The test aids in the serological interpretation of exposure to Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
Special Instructions
This test is not orderable on its own and is part of a profile test for M. pneumoniae Antibodies, IgG and IgM, Serum. For ordering details, refer to the MYCO profile. Further confirmatory testing for IgM is done through immunofluorescence assay if necessary.
Limitations
A diagnosis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection should not be based solely on serologic testing. Results require interpretation in conjunction with clinical evaluation and other diagnostic procedures, such as molecular detection. The IgM assay's performance has not been validated in specimens with antibodies to other respiratory illness-associated organisms, or closely related serovars which might cross-react with M. pneumoniae. The effectiveness of the IgG removal system used in the IgM test system has not been established beyond certain IgG levels.
