Myoglobin Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Myoglobin is a marker for skeletal and cardiac muscle, but not for smooth muscle. It serves as an oxygen transporter pigment. Antibodies to myoglobin can aid in the diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcomas, although the proportion of positive cells may be small and unevenly distributed in tissue sections. Additionally, myoglobin staining is not observed in carcinomas or other sarcomas, making it a specific marker for muscle-related conditions.
Special Instructions
This test only includes the technical processing of the stain without pathologist interpretation. It should not be ordered alongside a Pathology Consultation, as those technical stains will be canceled. Attach the pathology and immunostain labels to the transport container. Use the Immunostain Technical Only Envelope for specimen submission.
Limitations
Interpretation of this test should be carried out in conjunction with the patient's clinical history and other diagnostic tests by a qualified pathologist. Factors such as the age of paraffin sections and environmental conditions can influence immunoreactivity and slide staining quality. For best results, paraffin sections should be cut within 6 weeks. Proper storage and handling of glass slides are crucial to avoid variations in staining results.
