Nicotine and Metabolites, Random, Urine
Use
This test is useful for monitoring tobacco use and monitoring patients on nicotine-replacement therapy for concurrent use of tobacco products. It assists in verifying abstinence from tobacco use in programs aimed at cessation and helps tailor nicotine replacement therapy dosages. The presence and concentration of nicotine and its metabolites in urine can indicate tobacco use or high-dose nicotine patch therapy.
Special Instructions
If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send a Therapeutics Test Request Form (T831) with the specimen. Ensure proper collection of a random urine specimen with no preservatives.
Limitations
The test results may be influenced by improper specimen collection and handling, as well as by the knowledge of the time elapsed between the last nicotine dose and specimen collection. Passive exposure to tobacco smoke can also affect the accumulation of nicotine metabolites, particularly cotinine, in non-tobacco users.
