Onion IgG
Use
Onion IgG testing is used to identify immunologic sensitization to the food allergen found in onions. Food-specific IgG tests may assist in selecting foods for dietary evaluation through elimination and challenge in patients with food-related complaints. However, the clinical utility of these tests has not been fully established, as they indicate sensitization rather than confirmed allergy.
Special Instructions
This test should only be ordered by physicians who are aware of the test's limitations. It is important to note that food-specific IgG presence alone does not confirm a food allergy.
Limitations
The presence of food-specific IgG is indicative of an immunologic sensitization and not necessarily an allergy. Reference ranges for food-specific IgG tests are not established, and this test does not confirm food allergies, but merely suggests possible food sensitization. Physicians should interpret results with caution, especially understanding that the presence of IgG could be following prior exposure to the allergen.
