Organism Referred for Identification, Anaerobic Bacteria
Use
This test is intended to identify anaerobic bacteria involved in human infections, such as peritonitis, abdominal or pelvic abscesses, and other soft tissue infections. The presence of these bacteria can be significant, as they play a major role in the body's normal microbiota and their identification is crucial for appropriate infection management. Anaerobic bacteria can exhibit pathogenic characteristics, such as toxin production and antibiotic resistance, necessitating precise identification to guide treatment.
Special Instructions
The test involves the isolation of infecting bacteria and requires submission in pure culture without any mixed cultures. When ordered, reflex tests may be performed at an additional charge. All bacterial organisms submitted will be identified and billed as appropriate.
Limitations
This test relies on the submission of pure cultures from sources not normally colonized by anaerobes. As a result, improper submission or mixed cultures can affect the accuracy of the test. Certain anaerobic bacteria may exhibit resistance to specific antibiotics, requiring careful interpretation of results in the context of clinical findings.
