p53 Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is utilized for the detection of the p53 tumor-suppressor protein. Genetic alterations in the P53 gene, including mutations and deletions, can disrupt the regulation of the cell cycle and contribute to neoplastic transformation. Utilizing IHC allows for the identification of cells with prolonged half-life and accumulation of p53 protein within the cell nucleus. This test aids in the identification of neoplastic cells, as p53 abnormalities are prevalent in a variety of cancers, often correlating with a poor prognosis.
Special Instructions
This test is technical performance only and does not include a pathologist interpretation. Do not order this test together with PATHC / Pathology Consultation, as it will be canceled in such cases. Use the provided Immunostain Technical Only Envelope for specimen submission, ensuring proper labeling with the 'Attention Pathology' and pink 'Immunostain Technical Only' labels.
Limitations
The test does not provide pathologist interpretation, and best practices for specimen handling and storage must be followed to avoid diagnostic errors. The stability and immunoreactivity of the paraffin sections can be affected by the age of the cut slides and environmental conditions affecting the charged glass slides. Antigen stability varies significantly depending on the literature, necessitating slides be cut within six weeks for optimal results.
