p57 (KIP2/CDKN1C) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
The p57 (KIP2/CDKN1C) immunostain aids in the identification of cytotrophoblasts, intermediate trophoblasts, and villous stromal cells. p57 is a cell cycle regulatory protein expressed in normal placenta and acts as a tumor-suppressor gene by inhibiting cyclin dependent kinases. Loss of p57 expression is associated with complete hydatidiform moles, aiding differentiation from partial hydatidiform moles and hydropic abortions.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain; no pathologist interpretation is provided. If pathologist interpretation is needed, a pathology consultation (PATHC) should be ordered instead. Technical component stains ordered with PATHC will be canceled.
Limitations
The test does not include pathologist interpretation, only technical performance. Best practice for paraffin section stability is to be cut within 6 weeks, and glass slides should be minimally stored to avoid affecting slide chemistry. Unsuitable slides due to poor surface chemistry may result in inconsistent staining.
