Pathology Consultation
Use
This test is useful for providing a subspecialty second opinion for specific pathology questions referred by a primary pathologist. It is valuable for obtaining special studies that are not available locally. The consultation serves as a non-primary diagnostic opinion, helping to guide patient management by providing a thorough evaluation of the specimen and a formal pathology report compiled by experts in the relevant subspecialty areas. This aides in solving difficult diagnostic problems through access to a variety of ancillary studies such as cytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, and molecular genetics.
Special Instructions
A consultative opinion does not equate to a full primary diagnostic report. It is critical to send only the case specimens for which a Mayo Clinic pathologist interpretation is essential. For test ordering guidance for other specimen types, see the Pathology Consultation Ordering Algorithm. Physician-requested tests may not be performed if deemed unnecessary by the reviewing pathologist. Coordination with a Mayo Clinic pathologist is essential for determining accurate stains or studies required for definitive diagnosis.
Limitations
This test is not intended for primary diagnosis. It does not support QA/QC, or medico-legal reviews by a primary pathologist. Special studies may incur additional charges and require certain conditions, such as ancillary testing being necessary to obtain a definitive diagnosis. More than 25 client-stained slides will incur an additional surcharge unless sent in response to a Mayo Clinic request. Specific diagnoses require integration with clinical data, and improper collection or insufficient volume may interfere with testing.
