PAX8 Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
PAX8 is a member of the paired box gene (PAX) family of transcription factors involved in kidney cell and thyroid development. It aids in the identification of renal cell carcinomas, as well as papillary thyroid carcinomas and tumors of Mullerian origin, being expressed in a high percentage of renal neoplasms, including both malignant renal cell carcinomas and benign renal tumors (oncocytomas). PAX8 is also reported to be expressed in ovarian carcinomas.

Limitations
This test does not include pathological interpretation; it only performs the technical component of immunohistochemistry staining. Issues can arise from the age of a paraffin section affecting immunoreactivity, and from improper glass slides that can alter staining. Stability thresholds vary and are antigen-dependent. Best practices include minimizing time slides are stored after unpackaging, limiting exposure to high humidity and heat, and minimizing exposure to plastics.
