Pecan Hickory, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to pecan hickory and for defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. It helps in identifying allergens responsible for allergic responses and/or anaphylactic episodes, confirming sensitization prior to immunotherapy, and investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens. However, it is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy or in those whose medical management does not depend on identifying allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
For a listing of allergens available for testing, see 'Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies'. If not ordering electronically, complete the 'Allergen Test Request' form with the specimen.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine residual clinical sensitivity or in those where medical management does not rely on allergen specificity. False-positive results for IgE antibodies might occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE due to nonspecific binding. Interpretation should always consider clinical context as some individuals with minor sensitivities may have measurable levels of IgE.
