Pediatric Allergy Screen >8 Years, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to house dust mites, short ragweed, timothy grass, cat epithelium, or Alternaria tenuis. It helps in defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms, identifying allergens responsible for allergic response or anaphylactic episodes, confirming sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy, and investigating specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens.
Special Instructions
For a listing of allergens available for testing, see the Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies document. If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send the Allergen Test Request form (T236) with the specimen.
Limitations
The test is not useful for patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or in whom the medical management does not depend upon identification of allergen specificity. False-positive results may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding to allergen solid phases.
